Practical CM: Best Configuration Management Practices for the 21st Century

Superseded by ISBN: 0966124820
I am the author of this book. Publication of this version (hard cover) has been terminated and the book removed from print due to failure of the publisher (Butterworth-Heinemann) to update it in a timely manner. This version is two years out of date (Year 2000 version).

This edition has been superseded and replaced by ISBN: 0966124820, 'Practical CM: Best Configuration Management Practices for the 21st Century', Fourth Edition, Year 2002 version, spiral bound with CD-ROM.

Systems Engineering Approach to CM
This is a brief, but information-packed, book on configuration management from a systems engineering perspective. If you are seeking a book on software configuration management you would do better with A Guide to Software Configuration Management by Alexis Leon, or my personal favorite (but out-of-print), Configuration Management for Software by Stephen Compton and Guy Conner.

The first chapter is a 1 page summary of change philosophy, followed by a chapter that sets the scope of this book with an in-depth treatment of how CM and engineering development interrelate, with an emphasis on design control. This segues into a chapter on developing a CM plan and tailoring it to your specific requirements. The fourth chapter covers CM basics (in my opinion this should have been chapter 1), and also provides some advanced techniques and approaches. This chapter draws heavily from MIL-STD-973 and the related EIA standard 649, both of which are excellent foundations of a good CM program. A highlight of this chapter is the section on configuration control boards (CCB), which covers in depth roles and responsibilities, as well as key processes such as problem resolution and the change life cycle from the CCB point of view. This section is further augmented by chapter 8, which sets forth the roles, responsibilities and processes of a problem resolution board (PRB). The CCB and PRB are key organizational components of a strong configuration management process and this information makes this book valuable.

Another strong chapter, 5, is devoted to transitioning to production. While this book is not specifically about software configuration management, this chapter provides guidance and techniques with respect to release management that are missing from most books on software configuration management. Chapter 6, which covers production and support, are also as applicable to SCM as it is to system engineering.

The appendices are invaluable. In particular, appendices A (configuration management plan preparation guidelines) and B (questions and answers) provide clarity to some aspects of CM that usually take years of experience to master.

This book will not replace any of my books on SCM, but it nicely augments them. It is definitely must reading for system engineering practitioners, and should also be in the reference libraries of IS/IT production support and data center management professionals.

Software needs Confiruration Management to give productivity
In the past, Configuration Management (CM) shared the dubious distinction, along with cod liver oil and dental fillings, as one of those things you know are "good for you" yet not very pleasant to go through. And whenever anyone raised the topic, the response was, at best, polite smiles or feigned interest and, at worst, open hostility. Ultimately, the concern centered around implementation costs: "how do we reap the benefits of CM without incurring such a dear price".

The answer, as David Douglas Lyon points out in this eminently readable text, lies in automating the CM process with well-adapted software tools. From a clear examination of the conventional, classical CM process in a manufacturing environment, he then proceeds to describe the stepwise implementation of the new CM process using tools such as Product Data Management (PDM) systems. The result builds on best CM practices and, through the use of specific procedures and guidelines, maps out the steps to implement a fully automated CM environment in a cost-effective manner.

This is a practical, "how-to" book written by an experienced practitioner. There is something here for every reader providing food for thought across the spectrum from basic to advanced level. The complete planning, implementation and integration process for a PDM system is clearly laid out in a series of templates and the annex material. As a roadmap and invaluable guide to implementing a configuration management program, Mr. Lyon devotes an entire annex to the development of a Configuration Management Plan and another to tool selection.

In sum, this volume serves as a valuable guide to those seeking to combine powerful, computer-based tools to complement a mature, proven configuration management process. This is recommended reading for those seeking a CM process appropriate to enter the Twenty First Century.

Practical Statistics for Medical Research
Published in Hardcover by CRC Press (22 November, 1990)
Authors: Douglas G. Altman and Douglas G Altman
Average review score:

Great book for teaching med stats
I have been teaching statistical methods and epidemiology for graduate students in the health area for more than 5 years and this book is a hit. Previously I tried Armitage & Berry and got a lot of resistance from the students. Altman's book is well organized, presents the problems and their solutions in a very intuitive way, and focus on the real problems in the area. Very good for introductory courses. I usually use Kirkwood's Essentials of Medical Statistics in parallel.

excellent intermediate level treatment of biostatistics
This is a very well written and popular text on biostatistics. Altman writes for non-statisticians but the book is best suited for those with at least one prior course in statistics and those who have had mathematics through high school algebra. Emphasis is placed on the important practical problems. Good statistical designs and analyses are emphasized. The pitfalls with many published medical articles are discussed in Chapter 16.

I used this book to teach a 20 lecture course to students (engineers, clinicians and computer scientists) at Pacesetter in 1998 and at Biosense Webster in 1999 (both medical device companies that employed me as senior biostatistician). It was a good refresher course for the CRAs and engineers and it helped to make it easier for me to work with them on their statistical problems.

I have also taught a similar course to undergraduate students in the Health Science Department at Cal State Long Beach. Altman's book is a little too advanced to use as a text for that course but I did use it as a reference and covered material in Chapter 16 at the end of the course. Clear discussion of the medical literature is very important to these students and Altman does a great job!

Very valuable for consultancy
Doglas Altman's book is extremely useful for Statisticians involved in giving consultancy to non-Statisticians. I would almost say that it gives too many secrets away! Practically the whole field of Medical Statistics is covered. There is a specially good section on power calculations for clinical trials; the nomogram and examples should save a lot of time that might otherwise be spent in using formulae. Having said that, there is software around for this sort of calculation. The book contains much valuable advice on real-life advice Statistical issues, and and realistic problems (with answers) are provided for practice. kvery valuable.

A Prayer for the Ship

Thrilling Insider Look at Small-Boat Warfare
I don't mean to suggest that Douglas Reeman's writing hasn't improved over time, because it has. At the same time, the Reeman 'formula' has become more apparent as his titles pile up. This book, his first title, is still among my very favorite of his novels.

Probably at least in part autobiographical, what Reeman's first swing may lack in technical polish (and it doesn't lack much), he makes up for in his ability to tell an exciting story. I got caught up in the lives and war of the men of the MTB squadron, and the efforts of Sub-Lieutenant Royce to prove himself and create a place for himself among the war-hardened officers and men.

For some reason, I've always been attracted to the idea of small-boat warfare. Give me a PT boat over a battleship any day. If you're like me, or are just interested in an exciting story of the men (and women) caught up in the war at sea, Reeman is always a great author to turn to. And this title is one of his best.

Reeman's first book - and it's a cracker
This is where it all began for Douglas Reeman - in more ways than one. Said to be semi-autobiographical, this first novel of many perfectly captures life and death in the Coastal Forces of the Royal Navy in World War Two. The progress of a young officer is charted through his violent introduction to life on a Motor Torpedo Boat and we follow him as he gains experience and deals with the triumphs and tragedies of war. Probably the best book ever written on the subject, it suffers only from some writing lapses and stylish quirks which do not really hamper the story. A critique could be made of the somewhat predictable formula which the author tends to apply to all his books; they all include a "hero who grows up", an "intimidating figure of authority", a "romantic interest to keep the readers happy", a "set of action set-pieces which escalate to a final confrontation" and of course a "group of B-list characters who will be killed off a predictable moments". Notwithstanding these issues, APFTS is certainly a worthwhile read

An exceptional book on the Coastal Forces of the Royal Navy.
Douglas Reeman's "A Prayer for the Ship "covers the efforts of the motor torpedo boat crews of the Royal Navy during World War II. The book is written by a person who has lived in the environment of small boats powered by gasoline engines and high explosives carried on plywood hulls. We see that the crews are not profesional sailors but are,in almost every case, volunteer reservists who before the war were fashion photographers, delivery boys or bookies runners and who are now called upon to be professional Sailors. Clive Royce is a young, not dry behind the ears volunteer officer who is thrust into the no holds barred world of the Royal Navy's coastal forces. He is immediately faced with having to grow up quickly and acquire the skills required to lead men in battle. His experiences in this world of quick actiona and sudden death described and both humerous and sobering. His commanding officer is killed in a short sharp battle and while Clive brings the boat home, his skipper is replaced by a no-nonsense member of the long serving Royal Navy. Their styles soon lead to friction and unhappiness. There is a woman in Clive's life but their first meeting is under the most adverse of circumstnaces. Further meetings are hampered by time and distance but perseverance wins out. The daily routine of the crew is detailed in a highly readible and authoritative fashion, you can almost smell the gasoline fumes, fresh paint and gun-powder. Reeman also gives us a look into the human costs required to make the eventual victory possible, both in the dead and wounded, physically as well as emotionally. For a glimpse into the life of a little known part of the British Navy and the exceptional devotion to duty displayed by officers and men, this is the book to read. The Reluctant Assassin

Excellent
I recently purchased this book knowing I have very little time for reading. But the plot and the characters were so intriguing it kept me coming back every chance I got to see where it all was leading.

Refreshingly different
I couldn't put it down! This story is to be enjoyed by both male and female readers. From business intrigues enough to keep the most intricate business man and woman interested to sensitivity enough for the softer side of the romantic in each of us. This novel, packed with suspense, twists and turns, and the author's obvious sensitivity and love of family values, had me totally captivated from beginning to surprising end.

Excellent Story...captivating throughout
I don't have much time to write this, however I highly reccomend and I am glad to have read it. Two thumbs up!

Sacred Quest
Published in Hardcover by Zondervan (01 March, 2001)
Authors: Doug Banister and Douglas Banister
Average review score:

A great book to read if/when you feel burned-out...
Banister follows up his first release, The Word and Power Church, with his premise that there needs to be a convergence of Evangelicalism and Pentecostalism (Evangelicals could learn the passion and intimacy with Christ that Pentecostals embrance-- while Pentecostals could embrace also the depth of the Word that has defined Evangelicalism.

This work differs from Banister's first in that he seems to take a more individualistic look as to what this new theology (which, of course, is really very old and Biblical) would look like. That is, The Word and Power Church evaluated these concepts as to how they fit in the overall context of the Body of Christ. Here, Banister writes of what that Sacred Quest might look like on a more personal level.

In his usual transparent style of writing, Banister speaks of his burnout in ministry, what caused it, how the Spirit of God broke through to him in an intimate and personal way... and how his working theology continues to evolve from this relationship.

You will not find quick answers in the Sacred Quest. Rather, you will find the memoirs of one who is journeying along, seeking to know and do the will of God. And, you will be challenged-- and comforted-- as you take guidance from a fellow sojourner. The book is not about imparting information-- rather, it is about life transformation... a transformation that comes, steadily, as you discover-- and rediscover-- intimacy with God.

Walking on the Quest
Dr. Banister writes about his personal walk with God that includes some very painful events he has gone through. While struggling to maintain a successful ministry, he realizes that he needs to make changes to develop his personal walk with the Lord. These changes are not leaving behind what he has always believed but rather adding new perspective of how he can serve God.

What makes the book enjoyable is not only that Dr. Banister is a good writer, but that while telling his story, he gives the reader different things to think about. It is not a book that preaches at people, tyring to get them to change. Sacred Quest allows others to see what God is doing in his life and gives the reader some options as to what God may have them do. In no way does he cause anyone to feel guilty about whether or not they make the same changes that he has done. It's nice to have a Christian book that makes one think without the guilt.

Another great book from this author!
Once again, Doug Banister has managed to present profound truths in a personal, engaging book! This honest and vulnerable account of Dr. Banister's own quest for intimacy with God inspired and touched me in a way few books of it's kind have. For anyone desiring an intensely personal, real relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ, this is a must read!

Sean Leary's Greatest Hits: A Collection of Selected Columns 1990-1999
Published in Paperback by Dreams Reach Productions (November, 1999)
Authors: Sean Leary, Bill Douglas, and Scott Morschauser
Average review score:

Poetrychick
This is a great book for anyone who appreciates a dry wit and intelligent sense of humor. I agree with the other reviewer who compares his writing with Dave Barry but "less wacky." Rather than write about family and chores, Leary's focus is more broad, encompassing the media and pop culture. A very fun read. The illustrations are cool, too! I bet Bill Douglas does great comic-style work, too.

Outstanding
This is a FANTASTIC book. I've read Sean's column for years, and was delighted when he decided to publish a book with some of his greatest columns. Sean's command of the English Vocabulary is simply amazing. He has a way of phrasing words and sentences that will leave you in awe, wondering "How does he come up with that?"

If you are a Dave Berry fan, this book is a MUST-BUY! I think that Sean is far more talented than Dave is, not to mention just a tad less wacky. Dave, I think, writes more for the older generation, where-as Sean is more into Pop Culture and is more in tune with what is popular and current. Plus, Sean has a lot of insight and knowledge of just about anything pertaining to the entertainment world. You can't help but from laughing out loud when you read this book. For example, one of my favorite columns in the book is called, "Behold the Power of Candy". He was writing a spoof on candy becoming a super drug. Here is an excerpt... It all started with a tiny mint call Mento's. The Mentos commercials chronicle several dorks who find themselves in circumstances that would twist the mind of David Lynch.... Not all of the columns are humorous ones, there are some serious ones but the majority are funny. He begins with an amazing column that he wrote when he was 7, then ends with a spoof on VH1's "Behind the Music". Also, throughout the book he has little snippets of background information that gives you a little bit of behind the scenes.

Yes, I highly suggest buying this book. The price is right and you will NOT be disappointed I can promise you that! And if this book doesn't at the very minimum leave you with a smile on your face, then I guess you will need to be visited by "Foolish Jack"!

A Columnist for Folks in their 20s and 30s
Now younger (twenties and thirties) readers have a columnist who can speak to their age range. Sean's always funny, and at times he's hilarious! Sean's columns are hip and poke pointed but affectionate fun at lots of society's weirdisms. A cool book! Sean's column runs in the Midwest, but you don't have to be an Iowan like me to enjoy this book. Someday this guy will probably be national.

The Secret of Freedom
Published in Paperback by Hampton Roads Pub Co (December, 1994)
Authors: Vernon Kitabu Turner, Linda Goodman, and L. Douglas Wilder
Average review score:

A multi-level masterpiece, adventurous and inspiring.
How can you describe a book which touches you at so many levels? First it is a good story that forces you to reevaluate everyday life and things you take for granted. Then it show you how the powers of this world manipulate us to make our own minds our worst enemies but the book does not leave us there. "Secret" takes us on a journey of liberation and on a no-holds barred battle for freedom and justice. The reader clearly sees that there are some things we must do for ourselves. On the surface, one might think Secret was a Black book but it is as universal as Herman Hesse's Sidhartha or Homer's epic tale, the "Odyssey." You read it knowing that it is cutting through our deception with the authority of a Holy Book, yet it is not preachy. We are co-adventurers with the main character Zafir. We see the truth for ourselves, discover with him, moment by moment. I recommend The Secret of Freedom to anyone who is trying to make sense of this world and would like an uncompllicated but clear account. Written before the movie, "The Matrix," it reflects a similar Philosophy, while showing us that the power to break free is ours already. You will read The Secret of Freedom again and again.

One word, WOW
If I could write 1,000 words here about Kitabu's book Secret I would. However, I can't even put what I feel about his book into one sentence. This book is so many things in one, that you just sit back after reading it a say one word, "Wow." I very much wish I could convey my thoughts into words for this book, but I don't think they have words for what I feel. I was so moved. Thanks for another very well written book Kitabu.

FREEDOM!
A lovely mountain-mist prose, exciting insight, race, discovery, self, freedom: these are his tools. The result is The Secret of Freedom.

I am a journalist who met Kitabu while he was in Jamaica and had an opportunity to review his book for a national paper....

Extending beyond our 'limitations' Secret beautifully and almost poetically defines the idea that self is a great thing, individual and untouchable -- a core that makes the externals (like skin colour) irrelevant.

Written with such self-assured insight that you begin to feel: "Right, RIGHT, that's IT!", Secret offers a gently prodding look at the old problems. It is exciting to walk with Zafir through his discoveries that freedom lies within himself, and that the imprisoned can be free, even while those who imprison can be chained. The 'secret' isn't a secret at all, but something that is known if you make any attempt to find it within yourself: freedom is the acknowledgment of self, that untouchable core. And Kitabu communicates all this in a simple style that offers a greater vitality to the strength of these truths.

The book is a communion with the reader. You feel the freedom here, than read about it, you become Zafir. I cannot think of a better tribute to an author.

It quite obviously doesn't hurt that the author is a Zen practitioner and martial arts expert brought up in a Christian home, who has studied and published poetry.

His work is a blend of all these, and adds a behind the scenes richness to Secret...

The Sex You Want: A Lovers' Guide to Women's Sexual Pleasure
Published in Paperback by Marlowe & Company (10 December, 2002)
Authors: Lisa Douglass and Marcia Douglas
Average review score:

Great author, great book.
This book is not only for women! As a man who cares about giving quality 'satisfaction' every bit as much as recieving, I would have to say this is a must read for every adult man and woman. I found this book to be very illuminating in more ways that one. It has changed my perspective and enhanced my understanding tremendously. If you have the opportunity to see one of her seminars or attend her workshop, I highly recommend you do so. You are bound to learn about something new you didn't know about before. No matter how good or content you may believe you are in your sex life today, weather you are a man or woman, I would still encourage you to read this book. I believe you will find yourself recommending it to others as well.

It's HIM, not ME
My ex husband always made me feel like somehing was wrong with my sexuality. I bought it. This book pointed out that most women like myself, prefering clitoral stimulation, are in the vast majority. Sex is for our enjoyment, not men's egos. Any woman made to feel inadequate or "abnormal" because of her sexualtiy needs to read this book. It has taken me years to recover from being put down and made to feel bad about myself. Reading this book was a big milestone towards my emotional and sexual health and I highly recommend it.

Fantastic exploration of Sexuality
This book was originally released as Are We having Fun Yet in Hardback. It is a wonderful book that I cannot recommend highly enough. It has helped me to experience fantastic orgasms.

Wonderful for Kids
My son loved this title. It is one of the best in the series we have found so far. I would recommend to to anyone who is looking for something to inspire their "little athlete."
